7/24/18 #PershingProud - Get Involved!!

Good evening Pershing Generals! We have been working hard to prepare for the 18-19 school year
and we are excited to see our students and families in August.

There are a few items that I would like to bring to your attention as we approach the end of July.

Students may now log in and view their team assignment and schedules through the
Home access center. If you haven’t received a login in the mail, please contact the office. Please
note that schedules are subject to change prior to the beginning of school. Please verify that you
have the most up to date schedule before the first day.

There are lots of ways students can get involved at Pershing. Fall athletics is a great place to start.

Pick Up and Drop Off Procedures

Throughout the 17-18 school year, we have been working with The SPS transportation department, Springfield School Police Department and the Pershing staff to find ways to increase the safety of the Middle School Pick up and Drop off procedures. While modification to any procedure in the middle of the year can be a difficult transition, we would like to pilot a new procedure for the remainder of the 17-18 school year.

You will note two major changes. Beginning Monday, April 9th parents picking up and dropping off their students will utilize the main drive that passes by the front doors of the middle school building. Plan to enter the main drive with a right turn from Seminole St near the Sequiota Greenways Trail Head and exit with a left turn onto Ventura Ave to create a single file line filling the whole lane.

Second, you will note that the busses have been moved to Ventura Ave which allows for cars to pick up and drop off in the main drive. This change will require a staggered dismi…

We hope you and your students enjoyed the recent break and are ready for an exciting 4th quarter!  Right before break many students had the opportunity to participate in all-city competitions. The 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Archery teams won first place in the city and the 7th and 8th grade teams qualified for the state competition, competing on Friday March 23rd in Branson. 7th Grade boys basketball took third place in the city and the 8th grade boys basketball took the city title on a last second shot over Cherokee. Our Band, Orchestra and choir performed excellent and took 1s and 1+s.

There is still time for our 7th and 8th grade students to get involved this spring. Today, March 19th is the first day of track practice. Even if they didn’t make it today, we would love to see them out this week.

Additionally, this week our counselors are meeting with our current 6th and 7th grade students to determine their course selections for next year. 8th graders will note a number of different el…

3/1/18 #PershingProud

The power of a post-it! Pershing sixth graders felt convicted and empowered by the actions many young people have taken in the last few weeks. While they brian stormed many possible actions to take here at Pershing, a positive message on a sticky note was the quickest way to get started! On Tuesday, February 27th, every Pershing Middle School student and staff member came to school with an encouraging message left on their door or locker. Mine is still stuck to my computer screen, “Mr. Savage, you’re da bomb.” When I asked students what their note said, every student responded with a smile and could remember every word on the note. Our students aren’t done just yet, but even Fox 5 stopped by to see them in action! FOX 5 News: Pershing Middle School Students Leave Positive Notes on Lockers

As the spring semester moves forward, we encourage each of you to observe your students in Canvas and monitor their attendance and grades in the Home Access Center. Look for opportunities for your st…

The holiday season was a whirlwind here at Pershing. The Pershing students observed excellent musical performances by the Pershing Band, Orchestra, and Choirs during the Winter Music Assembly. The 7th and 8th-grade girls basketball teams 3rd and 4th respectively in the all-city tournament, the halls were covered in holiday cheer, and our clothing and food drives were a huge success.

As the spring semester moves forward, we encourage each of you to observe your students in Canvas and monitor their attendance and grades in the Home Access Center. Many students are getting involved this winter by participating in boys basketball and the inaugural season of Archery, where Pershing is fielding a team of over 120 archers! Stay safe and stay warm this January.

As the fall semester comes to a close, this time of year always allows for time to pause and reflect with gratitude. When I asked some of our student Generals what they were thankful for, I received some of the expected answers: video games, cell phones, and food.

Many expressed genuine gratitude for their families, teachers, friends, a house, their teachers, and their parents. Although middle school students are often frugal with their compliments towards adults, they are so very often grateful for the i…
